I’m not saying using UMDs will lead to the PSP downfall.
But the loading times, battery depletion, and vulnerability to scratches associated with UMDs, THAT will lead to the demise of the PSP.

Man, coming from Joystiq, what a raging fanboy you are. The DS is great and all, but the PSP has tons of games over that poor thing. Not to mention the non-gaming capabilities blow DS out of the water, and when you factor in homebrew it's not even a contest. Spare me!

Anonymous is a dick. This was very funny.

I never said the PSP was a bad system; it is a great system that has one big problem. UMDs.
Portable systems are supposed to be durable, and extremely easy to handle.
Compare removing one game and loading another between the DS and the PSP. It doesn’t take more then 3 seconds on the DS. Try that on the PSP and you’ll either get a busted system or a busted game or both.
Again, the PSP is a great system, but I don’t feel like treating a portable game system like royalty.
Oh, and don’t miss the Splatterhouse on PSP art contest on this site.

And Man don't call him a fanboy just because he made a good point. Why is everyone a fanboy if they make a comment pointing out a system that is better in their mind. I have both psp and ds and for the longest time psp didnt have shit for games and if I want movies I'll watch them on my tv, no in my fucking hand. DS is great since you can play advance games and new stuff with quick load time because of the cartridge. I personally agree with you. But I still like psp right now cause of Street Fighter Alpha 3

i completely agree that the biggest problem with the PSP is UMDs. The system in whole is great; but portable goods need a decent level of ruggedness, and UMDs are not in the least.

Does anyone else see the delicious irony in "Mr. Fuck-all-you-fanboys" up there being the biggest PSP fanboy of all?

Anonymous obviously doesn't know what he is talking about, the DS has many more games and the DS has a crap load of homebrew and multimedia capabilities.

lol very good one!

What do you mean "That will lead to the demise of the PSP"? The PSP is pretty much dead until God of War comes out.

even if the UMDs are a weakpoint in the PSP, I do not believe it is a critical weakpoint. Enough to bring the entire system down. I think one of the main reasons the DS is selling more is because of the price point. People just see the lower price and go with that. Not that there is anything wrong with a DS, cuz there isn't.

Anon. has spoken!

anonymous here again...

Disregard all that. I love cocks.

The thing that people really need to stop doing is comparing the PSP's non-gaming capabilities to the DS's. In regards to what Almadi was saying, non-gaming capabilities probably aren't very important at all, since they're supposed to be gaming machines.

If you're going to compare non-gaming capabilities of the PSP to something, great. But compare it to a fucking iPod or something that's also designed to have non-gaming capabilities.

Good point. Why limit yourself to being second place in one arena, when you can lose in two?

The PSP's biggest strength is that it's a good hybrid device. But compared against the iPod Touch or the iPhone, it's full of fail. It's biggest advantage in that realm is that it's a game device. When compared to the DS Lite, the PSP's biggest advantage is that it's an excellent media player.

The numbers are clear: UMDs failed in the marketplace. Again. The PSP being indelibly tied to that format is a millstone around it's neck. It's less than stellar battery life and vulnerability compromise a large part of it's mission. That isn't to say it doesn't have decent games...it does. But the fact that a 3rd-party case is considered a necessity is the first sign that something is wrong with the platform. The fact that most of it's library is simply not well adapted to actual portable gaming is another issue.

And since Sony invited the comparison, it shouldn't come as a shock when it gets made.
